New Glarus Brewing Company – Road Slush Stout
Oatmeal Stout
BJCP Style: 13C. Oatmeal Stout
Bottled
Bottled on: 12/29/14
Tasting on: 2/4/15
Glass: Stemmed Stout
Aroma: Overtones of chocolate and salted soft pretzel. Undertones of hop spiciness and caramel. 8/10
Appearance: Black with some brown on the edges. Light tan head with very fine bubbles and excellent retention. (In fact, I left some beer in the glass to warm up and it still had a considerable head over an hour later.) 10/10
Flavor: Chocolate in the beginning is followed by mild, dark-roasted malt in the middle that brings some malt bitterness. That bitterness is echoed by hop bitterness at the end and balanced by just a little malt sweetness. The aftertaste is clean with some background chocolate lingering. 18/20
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body with moderate carbonation. No alcohol. 9/10
Overall Impression: A stout with a clean malt profile that lets chocolate and dark malt show through while still leaving room for mild hop bitterness in the background. 46/50
Final Score: 91%
