Coffee Stout
BJCP Style: 13E. American Stout
ABV: 6.5%
Bottled
Bottled Date: 8/20/14
Tasting on: 11/9/14
Glass: Stemmed Stout
Aroma: Overtones of coffee extract with notes of chocolate. Undertones of dark roasted malts and hops. 10/10
Appearance: Black, with deep brown and amber highlights on the edges. Tan head. 10/10
Flavor: The beginning has a strong, rich coffee flavor, comparable to cold-brewed coffee, that interacts well with the hop bitterness. Coffee is still present in the middle but the flavor begins to shift more towards the hops until they dominate in the end for a brief moment, occasionally letting citrus flavors shine through. The beer has a dry, dark malt background throughout. Coffee lingers for a bit in the aftertaste, but gives way to chocolate and even some tangy flavors as it fades. 18/20
Mouthfeel: Medium body. Moderate carbonation. No hot alcohol. 9/10
Overall Impression: An excellent coffee stout that reminds me of cold-brewed coffee. The beer lacks any real sweetness, which helps to highlight the interaction between the coffee bitterness, hop bitterness, and dry, dark malts. 47/50
Final Score: 94%
